Add a SummaryThe Birth House is the story of Dora Rare, the first daughter to be born in five generations of Rares. As a child in an isolated village in Nova Scotia, she is drawn to Miss Babineau, an outspoken Acadian midwife with a gift for healing. Dora becomes Miss B.’s apprentice, and together they help the women of Scots Bay through infertility, difficult labours, breech births, unwanted pregnancies and even unfulfilling sex lives. Filled with details as compelling as they are surprising, The Birth House is an unforgettable tale of the struggles women have faced to have control of their own bodies and to keep the best parts of tradition alive in the world of modern medicine.
Quotes
Add a QuoteMother works and prays too hard to have anyone but those with the cruellest of tongues doubt her devotion to my father. When there's no good explanation for something, people of the Bay find it easier to believe in mermaids and moss babies, to call it witchery and be done with it.

Add a CommentI received this book as a birthday present. It turned out to be one of the best books I read that year!
Well written and a believable storyline.
Oh my. This book is really special. It woke something deep inside me, stirred an ancient womb-well of sisterhood, power and knowing. I could smell the nova scotia sea and taste the traditional foods. It was a pleasure to read.
I loved this book! I couldn't put it down! Several of my girlfriends and I swap books and this is definitely one that's made the rounds.
When I first started reading this book I thought it was kind of slow and i bit boring, but then I got into and after I finished reading it I loved the book... its one of my favorites. I wouldn't mind reading it again.
This book is now one of my all time favorites! If you are someone who enjoys books about childbirth, and historical events I would recommend it! LOVED IT!
i could not put this book down i loved every part of it Ami Mckay did a wonderful job on this one
Loved it!
Breezed through this in about 4 days, so from me, that means it was pretty good! Really enjoyed it and will look for more from Ami. (Finished Jan 9-12). I made the groaning cake from the recipe in the back. It tasted great....even though I forgot to put in the sugar!!!! I used 3/4 applesauce and 1/4 whole cranberries from a can, instead of the grated apples, and also threw in a handful of chopped pecans. Yummy. I'm not disappointed that I didn't get to try making it while I was in labour!!!!
Loved it...also read her next book. Great story and well written.
