At the beginning, the book is slow. As you read more, you start to understand along with the hero of the book. However, it is deeply troubling. And takes you for a ride, emotionally. These kids are being used, and by the end of the book, it is clear they will continue to be tested with no rest into the sequel. I will not read the next 2 sequels, as the kids are being treated cruelly, at the expense of adults watching them, and trying to control them. Very, very sad.

16 year old Thomas is the new boy at The Glade. He has no memory of how he got there or of his past. But he is not the only one. Once he gets to The Glade, he discovers that every boy there went through the same thing and that they also have no memory of their past. Thomas's arrival was not surprising (they get a new boy every 30 days) but what was truly unexpected was the arrival of another new kid the next day. This new kid is a girl. The only girl they've gotten ever. But what is truly frightning is what the girl says and the note she is carrying. She says that the ending is near then goes into a coma. The note in her hand says that she is the last new kid. Ever!
