Summaries
Add a SummaryAlek and "Dylan" Sharp are thrown together in a race to keep their secrets--one hiding his heritage, the other his --or is it her?-- gender. Altogether a thrilling steampunk novel.
Prince Aleksander is on the run from the germans. With his parents dead, he flees to a secret safe house in Switzerland. Deryn Sharp is disguised as a boy named Dylan, so she can fly. When the ship she works on crashes on a Switzerland glacier, things don't look good. Until she meets a mysterious boy named Alek... Alek is a clanker; Deryn is a darwinist. But when they work together, they might just be able to find a way off of the glacier. A steampunk fantasy about World War one that never was...
Notices
Add a NoticeCoarse Language: Nothing too bad, just Deryn's articulate speech. Alek swears at moments.

Add a CommentI read Leviathan as a book report 2 years ago. Scott Westerfeld came to speak at my school and showed us some of the illustrations in the book. The illustrations were the real reason I wanted to read it. However, I soon realized that the story was so compelling and interesting, that I made my parents get me the book, more for the story this time than the pictures. The realistic quality mixed with the science fiction makes it perfect. The world in which Deryn (or should I say Dylan) and Alec live is just close enough the our real world, yet just different enough to be a believable theory as to what our world could have been...
Excellent series. A great take on the WW1 era. Scott Westerfield has crafted a highly believable, culture intensive world with a similar depth to it as his Uglies series. This is the sort of standard that all youth fiction should be at. Absolute quality, I highly recommend this series.
I totally agree with you Steampunklord!
I reallllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly wish they would just make this into a movie stupid hollywood
LOVE this trilogy, just finished it and am now in mourning because it's over. Interesting take on WW1--where the Allies use genetically-engineered animals as war-beasts (including giant living air-ships), while the Axis uses mechanical weapons. Note: I do not like steampunk, but this actually works and feels natural. The characters develop beautifully without you consciously noticing--the spoiled, sheltered prince weaseled his way into my affections, and how could I not have a fist-bump ready for the tomboy who ran away to join the air force (having to disguise herself as a boy to do it--this is, after all, the world before votes for women and all that). As an added bonus, beautiful illustrations are peppered in. Already bought Leviathan in hardcover, casting a greedy eye out there for the next 2 books (Behemoth and Goliath). It's been a very long time since I've been this passionately in love with a book or series.
this is the first book of a trilogy. WW1 with blimps and stuff. it's pretty cool. Sam liked it.
one of my favorite series of all time. period. steampuck fiction is awesome!
This is the first book and I loved the charecter's in this book. It's like you almost know them personally. The story was a great one and I can't wait for the next book.
It was actually really good. i thought it was just WW1 in summary but its completely different! it still has some of the basic stuff about war but the story changes completely and there's more excritement than ever!!! i especially like how the writer makes you feel like you know the characters (deryn and alek) personally. they are like a long lost friend. also it combines all sorts of things in one book! it involves history, geography, adventure
Tight, crisp young-adult novel set in an alternative 1914 where giant armoured walking machines and DNA modified flying air-beasts confront each other across the frontiers as the Great War is about to break out. Great imagination, great illustrations. Male and female heroes!
