Add a CommentThis is my second time reading the book; first time in fifth grade. It was just as enjoyable as the first time reading it. I loved the names of people. I mean who comes up with a name like Smaug or Balin anymore? No one. I adored it. I could see bits of Harry Potter in it and I see why people say that she copied the LotR series but I found it really good. A good read for people who love fantasies and adventures.
This is one of the best books ever! My favorite book by far. Way better than those meaningless teen books!
I thought it was brilliant. Great read, I love Fantasy/adventure mixed with Middle-Earth. It IS a lot easier to read than most of Tolkien's books, and interesting.
Expert world building, wonderful plot, the beginning of the epic fantasy sub-genre. That said, it's probably going to be better in combination with the movie much like the LOTR trilogy. The beginning had a lot of atmosphere and personality, but it gradually declined into pretty much a summary of events with occasional suggestions of personality. The dialogue is rather awkward and there is almost no emotional impact. With the LOTR trilogy, the movies have all the emotional impact and aesthetic appeal but you have to read the books in order to fully know what's going on and have a complete understanding of the history and backstory. I think that The Hobbit will be similar. Amazing, but you need both components to get the whole picture.
such a good book, great prelude to the LOTR trilogy.
I love this book! I love Bilbo and Bombur and Gandalf and Beorn and Bard. I even love Smaug. You should read this book!
I 'wasted my time on this book', and LOVED IT!!!!! It's a really good classic, and i loved the characters! I love Bilbo!! I can't wait for the movie!!
This is a great book especially for children to be introduced to to Tolkien and fantasy at large. This book is a little more childish than the Lord of the Ring series, but still a classic and a joy everytime I read it.
HOBBITS ARE AWESOME(please excuse the narnian username)
It is best to begin with the hobbit. Unlike the biblical high fantasy of the Silmarillion, and the weighty, serious tomes of the Lord of the Rings, this one fairly skips along. An enjoyable read.
