Add a SummaryAmy was born on Earth, sometime in the not-so-distant-future. The world is on the verge of an economic collapse and a ship christened Godspeed has been sent across the universe to a planet names Centauri-Earth in the hopes that people will be able to colonize this planet. The voyage is supposed to take 300 years and so a group of scientists and military personnel are frozen before the voyage begins. These people will be awakened when the ship reaches its destination and will colonize it. Amy's parents were chosen to be frozen and sent on this journey. Amy goes with them as one of the few nonessential passengers stowed in the cargo bay for 300 years. But she is woken up abruptly, 50 years before she is supposed to. The ship is now ruled by Eldest, a cruel but efficient dictator who controls those aboard the ship by lying to and sedating them. She becomes friends with Eldest's teenage son and heir, Elder, and the two try to figure out who woke her up, and why. ---See my full review here: http://throughthebookvine.blogspot.com/2011/03/across-universe.html

Add a CommentI really liked this book. The world/culture was well fleshed out. It was definitely a page turner. I liked the ending. A nice sense of closure and enough mystery to get me to want to read the second book. Even though it was obvious "who did it", it wasn't obvious why. I enjoyed taking that journey as a reader.
this book started out good but then when she was revived it got boring. i couldnt finish it. i may try and read it again sometime
Satisfying sci fi tale about what happens to a girl who is cryogenically frozen along with her parents and a team of colonists, to journey to a new planet 300 years away from Earth. The first half of the book is irritating because so many secrets are being kept from the two main characters, and therefore from the reader, too. But the plot picks up after that. The ending is realistic while giving a sense of resolution. Recommended for teens.
I loved this book. I think that is all I need to say.
This book did not meet my expectations at all. I thought it was way to predictable. The author made the "murderer" way to obvious so when he was finally revealed it wasn't a big surprise. AT ALL. The predictability of this novel made this book an average read for me.
you should read it. lets leave it at that
WOW!!!! Wasn't sure when i started this book, if i was going to like it. I don't normally read space sci-fi. The world Beth Revis creatd is twisted and dysfunctional in so many ways. Not everyone agrees with the way things are being run on the ship and deal with it in their own way. Anyways I would recommend this book to anyone. When i finished the book, i was statisfied with the ending, but had many thoughts and questions still unanswered, and thought that the book could be a stand alone or could have a sequel. Did some research and found out this is actually going to be a trilogy, next book out January 2011, A Million Suns, can't wait.
I was extremely disappointed with this book. I am so surprised to see so many good reviews! The average rating of 4 stars for this book on this site astounds me. I looked forward to reading it the second I heard about it and almost bought it in the store instead of waiting to get it from the library. Thank goodness I didn't buy it! The plot sounded so good but it was like the author did not know where to go with it once she started. The characters were hard to relate to and many of the events that happened were extremely unrealistic.I did not like the sexual focus this book had and I think the almost-rape scene was unnecessary and offensive. If you ask me do not waste your time reading this book--there are so many great dystopian books out there that you do not need to read this one.
A beautiful dystopian novel. Well crafted and written very smoothly. I couldn't have been bored at all. A little sketchy as for content in some areas but that just filled out the story. Very well done! I will read this multiple times! I highly recomend it!
Across the Universe is probably one of the most hyped up books of 2011, so I was a little worried that I wouldn't like it when I got it. By page 8, I knew I would love it. I actually was crying real tears by the eighth page, which astonished me. I barely know these characters! How can I feel so bad for them? Maybe it was random circumstances, but I would rather believe it's because of how genius this book is. I don't cry a lot when I read. Hardly ever, but at least 3 times I was reading with tears in my eyes. Now I sound like a sentimental fool, but I really am not. Across the Universe is told in the alternating perspectives of Amy and Elder. Amy is a "nonessential" teen who went through the whole freezing process to be able to stay with her important parents who are essential to the colonization of the new planet Centauri-Earth. However, something goes terribly wrong and Amy is unplugged and awakened 50 years earlier than she was supposed to be while her parents and everyone she loves are still frozen. Amy is an awesome character. She's outspoken and emotional. She has unique characteristics, dreams and hobbies. She's also very likable and strong. I loved reading from her point of view. Elder on the other hand has been born and raised on the Godspeed as the future leader, the Eldest. He's curious to find the truth, a bit more calm and rational than Amy, and just a nice guy. I was totally crushing on him. During the course of Across the Universe, Elder had to make many hard choices, and I think he made all of the right ones. He's a character who really experienced growth and was also great to read of. The plot of Across the Universe is filled with twists, turns, and loop-di-loops. Seriously, there was surprise after surprise. There were many questions all through the story and the plot was fast paced. It answered many questions, but then new ones kept popping up. One of my favorite things about Across the Universe is that from the beginning, you don't know everything about the characters. I liked discovering secrets they hid and new sides of them. The world of the Godspeed is very well thought out. Everything that's described makes sense, even if it's in a twisted way, and the diagram of the Godspeed on the cover really helps picture the ship. There are many new ideas that really interest me and others that make me sick, such as the Season. I won't go further than that for fear of spoilers, but I will say the story ended up being more real and frightening than I thought it would be. Overall, Across the Universe is the kind of book that makes you cry, and then makes you laugh. It makes you appreciate the world around you, as well as question it. It's categorized as Sci-Fi, but it has much more to offer. I think it's a fabulous book by Beth Revis that I would recommend everyone read. I loved it so much that I'm giving it 5 stars
