An Emotional Roller-Coaster!
The situation with Canada's Indigenous People is a theme that is highlighted here in the treatment of a Mi'kmaw family from Nova Scotia when their 4 yr old daughter/sister goes missing while the family is doing their annual berry picking in Maine by US police and beyond when they return to Canada.
For 5 decades Aunt June kept her sister Lenore's secret from Norma. Norma's bad dreams are passed off as fantasy by her mother Lenore, her father Lewis and her Aunt June. Her skin tone in summer is another lie told to help her fit in. Her imaginary friend "Ruthie" helps her cope.
Meanwhile Ruthie's family is torn apart by her loss. Everyone takes responsibility for her disappearance and it haunts them all.
This novel presents the reality of being 'an Indian' in a white man's world. An Emotional Roller-Coaster!

Another cliff hanger. Must be the author's "thing". It isn't mine, other wise this would be a 5.

This was like renewing acquaintances with old friends. Love the characters and the plot was very different from what I normally expect of an Ali Reynolds novel - I loved it! Much more intense.
When B. becomes collateral damage in a revenge killing, the team at High Noon pull out all the stops to find the motive and the killer. The investigation links 4 murders and a mob run murder for hire service. Characters are fleshed out even more as others at High Noon have to step into roles they don't prefer to handle.
To get the most out of this book I suggest you read others in the series though it can be read as a stand alone with how well J A Jance introduces each character without a lot of background verbiage they are relatable. This was like renewing acquaintances with old friends. A very different subject but Linwood Barclay handled it skillfully! I pictured "menacing self driving cars" like kids' cartoons until I read Barclay's description of the Arrivals terrorizing the population of Garrett's Island.

The cold wilds of Alaska made for a perfect setting for this high tension novel featuring US Marshal, Arliss Cutter. A serial killer is chopping up young marginalized women, mainly prostitutes. Cutter volunteers for transport duty of 3 criminals, unaware of how dangerous one of them really is. The violence of the winter cold matches the plot's violent actions. Not for the squeamish but not horrifyingly graphic.
Set-up for next investigation in book 5 is one I look forward to as Arliss investigates the death of his brother Ethan.

I laughed, I cried, I smiled, I tensed in anticipation of the next encounter, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Bluebird.
A historical romance beginning in the Belgium battlefields of WW 1, through the Spanish Flu that followed and home to Windsor ON Canada and Prohibition. The Canadian nurses who served overseas in WW 1 wore robin's egg blue dresses and white veils, hence the name "Bluebirds" Adele is one of those nurses whose patient Jerry and his brother John are tunnellers. The Bailey Brothers will become an important to Adele.
The realities of war are described to bring the era to life. The struggles for women to allow them freedom of choice is begun in this period when their traditional roles come with the added need for workers to replace the men who are fighting overseas. Rumrunning between Windsor and Detroit Michigan was a dangerous but profitable occupation for those returning home from war.
I know I can depend on Genevieve Graham for an in depth look at Canadian History even when that history is not always pleasant. This time I have no tears from atrocities but from social injustices that even I witnessed in my lifetime. She did not disappoint!I laughed, I cried, I smiled, I tensed in anticipation of the next encounter, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Bluebird.

Summary:
This Hendricks-Pekkanen novel is one you can't put down and days later you are still stunned by the ending. Each book they write is better than the last!
Controversial therapist, Avery Chambers, decides to take on Marissa and Matthew Bishop as clients to fix the relationship of this "Golden Couple". Lies and half truths blur the reality in many of their sessions as Avery calls them out on their actions and reactions. Meanwhile Avery is a whistleblower who has her own enemy threatening her life.
Just when you think you know something it dissolves into a quagmire of doubt. Every character is operating on an agenda that is not as it seems. I am still shaking my head at the entire plot with its constant twists and turns. Then the final reveal and the light of truth makes you review every step of this story.

Absolutely loved the combination of laughter and seriousness of living in 1941 London. War work for women is a major push and Emmy Lake finds herself torn between writing positive articles and helping the mothers in the munitions factor to access safe childcare while they work to support their men. For many it is a need to financially support themselves and their children too. During all of this Emmy and Charles decide to get married. Not a simple task for a journalist and a career soldier. I thoroughly enjoyed this suspense novel. The addition of an excerpt of an interview featuring Beverley McLachlin and John Grisham is a nice bonus.
Jilly Truitt feels compelled to represent Vera Quentin who is accused of murdering her dying mother, Olivia Stanton. Vera adamantly denies doing this but a trial is underway despite all of the background activities that have been going on for the past two years.
Jilly's other case representing Danny Mau leads to a hit being put out on her life. Jilly also finds herself involved in the rescue of a young woman escaping a human trafficking ring.
The details of the investigation and trial kept me turning pages. The characters are well-developed and easy to bond with.
I did find the outcome from the Danny hit predictable and saddening when it happened.

It has been a long time since I've read this series and it was wonderful to reconnect with the characters again.
Sharon McCone is an investigator who takes on cases that have social impact and this case involves Native Women who have gone missing and/or have been murdered. The setting is in the US but the same realities for Native Women exist in Canada.
Raised as 'white' Sharon discovered her birth parents are Shoshone (Native American) earlier in this series. Now undercover with the Meruk Nation in Northern California on the Oregon border Sharon is dealing with wealthy ranchers, prejudice law enforcement and the US Bureau of Indian Affairs laws. This Allotment Act is explained under the Jan 10 headed chapter. This will probably be an eye opener to most readers.
This novel moved quickly and the danger Sharon faces is very real. I couldn't put this one down.
The ending wrapped up reminicsing about characters from earlier in the series and brought back a lot of memories for me.It has been a long time since I've read this series and it was wonderful to reconnect with the characters again.
