This is a terrific film and a great drama. It has all the thoughtfulness of a good play but its in the form of a film. The main character (colonel or general?) is fascinating; a tragedy that will have one ruminating for hours.

This is a 1959 Italian film directed by Roberto Rossellini.
The film is based on a novel by Indro Montanelli which was in turn based on a true story.
A petty thief played by Vittorio De Sica is hired by the Nazis to impersonate an Italian resistance leader, General della Rovere, so that the Nazis could infiltrate a group of resistance prisoners in a Milan prison.
In the end, however, the con man faces the death as General Rovere.
Altough he seems to have changed into a real patriot, his inner process of wrestling with his conscience is not clearly depicted.
In any case, I see the director's compassionate artistry in this war-time drama.

With great character development and effective screen writing, I found this to be a well crafted and enjoyable film. The Black and White filming was also well done, and really drew me into the imaginary vision of WWII Italy.

Good quality upper case & visually readable English language sub-titles. Unfortunately not all the spoken dialogue is translated: The final words spoken by a German officer at the end of the film are not translated, which was a disappointment during a critical time of the film's concluding minutes. Otherwise, it's well directed, very-well acted and has excellent b&w cinematography. They don't make films like this any longer anywhere, neither in Hollywood nor in Europe.
