You know you're in trouble when the movie poster displays more wit and intrigue than the movie itself. "The Devil traps five sinners in a hole, and forces people to watch them die." the comic relief solemnly intones. OK; how did the Devil manage to do this before elevators and cameras were invented? Why is the Prince of Darkness taking a day off from war, famine, and pestilence in order to torture four sinners in a trapped elevator? Why these four people out of a planet full of sinners? Don't ask silly questions! We know the Devil is here because everything goes wrong; like an open faced sandwich falling on the wrong side to the floor. I would imagine the Father of Lies would act on a larger scale than ruining someone's lunch, but what do I know? Unfortunately, a top notch cast and crew are wasted as what could have been an intriguing "locked room" mystery becomes downright silly, and the promised pay off at the end is as weak as watered down tea.

Found that it was more mystery then horror, but extremely intense with a huge game changing twist at the end.

Just bad.

The generic storyline; weak writing; cliche characters and lackluster acting torments the viewer far greater than anything the 'Devil' inflicts in this film.

Enough said?

I find this to be a very enjoyable movie. Much more suspenseful than your average horror movie. The first time watching this I didn't know what to expect right up until the end. Loses a bit of charm in repeat viewings however, as you know all the twists and besides those this movie doesn't offer much.

I recommend it, but probably only once. Not really a good movie for multiple viewings.

I loved the 'idea' of this film, but hated how they did it. Boring at times and predictable at others, they had such an oppurtunity to deoliver us something original and they dropped the ball...

This movie cracks me up, similar to "Signs". What is the devil doing to these victims whose crimes that range from bank fraud to pickpocketing? Nobody else in the entire world has done anything worse than this? It irritates me because it has a good premise where a group of people are trapped in an elevator and one of them is a murderer. That's a great idea! But when you add that in with the devil, that's really stupid but it's enjoyably stupid. I say check this out because it's pretty funny.

Although the name of the movie is called "The Devil" i felt like one while trying to get my friend to watch it. You see, my friend has fallen asleep while watching "Signs" and was very pissed after purchasing "The Happening" because of all the cool previews. She did offer me the film for free and i said no. So, knowing her love affair for Mr. M.Night's movies, i knew what her reaction would be. It took 2 hours between begging and going all the way downtown in manhattan to KATZ famous restaurant for their very delicious Pastrami sandwiches, before she finally said yes. DAMN!!! It the very first time i had to bribe her to watch a movie with me, but it was worth it because the sandwiches were excellent and her reaction towards the movie was, well, perfect!! Listening to her curse, scream, and yell very loud at my television trying to tell the actors in the elevator who the "devil" was, made me smile. At least she didn't fall asleep or go into the bathroom and never return. The audio was mostly "all around sound" on my HOMETHEATER although there were some sprinkled moments of audio coolness. By the end of the movie she had asked me to never watch or ask her to watch another M.Night movie EVER!!!! I though the movie was a bit corny and finding out who was the "devil" was no surprise. I decided to give this movie 2 stars. For a corny but promising story, decent acting (something i never really judge) and listening to my friend guess several times about who the "devil" was. 2 large bags of popcorn. 1 buttered, 1 white chedder cheese mixed with Utz plain patato chips and Wise barbeque chips and a large can of Arizona Iced Tea.

Another weird wnderful film from M.Night Shyamalan. I love his quirky films, this is no exception as again this plot is very unusual., like all his films. Since he always has a small part in his films he reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock, I wonder if that Director influenced his work. I look forward to all his films as he fills a void like no other Director can.

Boo! I watched the bonus features in hopes of an apology, and was disappointed again.

This could have been so much better, but when one of the characters said to the cop, "You have to accept the possibility that one of these people could be the devil," with a straight face, I knew the whole thing has gone right off the rails, and wasn't coming back.
