From Captain George Vancouver to Muriel " Curve of Time " Blanchet to Jim " Spilsbury's Coast " Spilsbury, visitors to Desolation Sound have left behind a trail of books endowing the area with a romantic aura that helps to make it British Columbia's most popular marine park. In this hilarious and captivating book, CBC personality Grant Lawrence adds a whole new chapter to the saga of this storied piece of BC coastline.

Young Grant's father bought a piece of land next to the park in the 1970s, just in time to encounter the gun-toting cougar lady, left-over hippies, outlaw bikers and an assortment of other characters. In those years Desolation Sound was a place where going to the neighbours' potluck meant being met with hugs from portly naked hippies and where Russell the Hermit's school of life (boating, fishing, and rock 'n' roll) was Grant's personal Enlightenment--an influence that would take him away from the coast to a life of music and journalism and eventually back again.

With rock band buddies and a few cases of beer in tow, an older, cooler Grant returns to regale us with tales of "going bush," the tempting dilemma of finding an unguarded grow-op, and his awkward struggle to convince a couple of visiting kayakers that he's a legit CBC radio host while sporting a wild beard and body wounds and gesticulating with a machete. With plenty of laugh-out-loud humour and inspired reverence, Adventures in Solitude delights us with the unique history of a place and the growth of a young man amidst the magic of Desolation Sound.

Entertaining and informative. Full of stories from the "Sunshine Coast" of BC; folks called 'Coasters'. Well told and recommended.

Adventures in Solitude

thank you

From his early days as a awkward child in thick glasses meeting the local nudists, to a “he-man” wrestling a giant octopus out of his boat, Grant Lawrence writes stories of his life in Desolation Sound on the West Coast that are great to read. Sometimes his humour reminded me of Jerry Lewis, sometimes of David Sedaris. His historical portraits of the people who have lived there can be strange or unsettling, but always interesting. Highly recommended. (submitted by AMW)

sometimes when grabbing a book off the shelf for no reason than liking the cover or title doesn't work out for me, in this case it did. Grant Lawrence gives a very amusing account on what it was like to have a cabin in the middle of nowhere and while hating it at first, he and his sister and mother finally come around to enjoy it. the best stories are from when he is grown up and has the place to himself, and his rather large posse. great story lines and characters along with Grant's humerous anecdotes made this an easy read.

I truly enjoyed this book. The fly-leaf describes author Grant Lawrence's story as a combination of Ken Kesey and Swiss Family Robinson. There's a hint of old Hunter S. in there, too. At any rate, the writing evokes the spirit of Desolation Sound (Captain Vancouver, who named the Sound, was both right and wrong) and the cast of eccentric characters who inhabit the story. Plus, there's a feel-good ending as Gillian (Jill Barber, jazz singer) comes to join the cast. Almost makes you feel like heading out to Lund to check it out.

Interesting for the readers of Desolation Sound books. I have visited some of the places talked about. And now Lund is on my list of places to see.

Some to the historical facts are incorrect. Most noteably, "The Curve of Time" was not published posthumously!

And Edmonton is not in Northern Alberta. This Vancouver boy needs to look at a map!

Totally enjoyed this book. Took me back to my younger life. If you are a coastal BCer a must read.

Interesting if you have lived or sailed thru the coastal waters of B.C.
Describes a lot of "odd balls" or exccentrics that live on the coast.

This book was pretty enjoyable. All about Grant's experiences growing up at the cottage in Desolation Sound. The writing style is amusing and incorporates historical facts, similar to the way Bill Bryson does.

Very quick read, entertaining stories. Makes you want to experience the place. Not sure if it was worthy of a Writers Trust nomination though.
