This is a 1944 war-time American film directed by Raoul Walsh.
The stage is set on France.
Since it is an American film, the Germans as well as the French speak English.
Because of the war-time American film, it naturally appears to be a propaganda.
During World War II, Jean Picard faces the guillotine in the prison yard.
Then suddenly comes a British air raid and a bomb is dropped on the prison by mistake.
Picard escapes and meets Marianne, a local French girl, and falls in love with her.
This romance is added to the otherwise strictly war movie.
Picard tries to gain freedom.
In due course, however, he struggles with his conscience over the fate of the hostages, her trust in him as well as his own perception of himself.
It is an entertaining yet thought-provoking film.
