Rita, a young working-class woman in Liverpool, desperately wants an education. She enrolls in literature tutorials at a British university to escape from her dreary life as a hairdresser, as well as a confining existence at home with a husband who wants her to choose motherhood over education. Her professor is Frank Bryant, a disillusioned, alcoholic English professor who encourages his students to forsake dead poetry and enjoy life. As Rita is transformed into a free spirit, Frank is forced to confront his own life.

Against the beautiful backdrops of Trinity College, Dublin (standing in for Liverpool) we are introduced to burned-out English professor Frank (played by Michael Caine), self-medicating with too much alcohol as he grows ever more bored with the pompous students who occupy his classes. Into his life bounds the effervescent Rita, winningly played by Julie Walters. Rita is also unsatisfied with her life, as a hairdresser constantly being pushed by her family to have a baby. But Rita wants something more out of life. Signing up for private tutoring sessions, she is assigned to Frank. As the discovery of literature opens up Rita's world in ways she never could have imagined, it brings conflict with her family and unease in the heart of Frank, fearful that in "gaining the whole of literature" Rita is somehow losing herself. I loved this movie when it first came out and I feel it still stands up well.

I didn't like this one. Too much swearing and very slow moving.

Decent, and holds up well over time, but nothing special.

A very special film. Julie Walters is amazing as is Michael Caine (someone mentioned Michael Keaton in error.) Well worth watching. 5 STARS!!

A 1983 variation of the Pygmalion story, without the usual romantic ending. The well-written script and fabulous acting by Julie Walters and Michael Caine make this a pleasure to watch.

Does a comedy have to have a nerd in it? Educating Rita answers the question, because this is sophisicated comedy and it is a joy to watch. Julie Walters is not a household name, but this part was made for her. Michael Keaton plays her professor to a T. Very inspiring and fun the whole way!

I finally watched this classic - what fun! Great acting and a good script that does not follow any formula. My kind of movie.

Predictable fantasy but easy entertainment. Glad no syrupy romance is involved.
