This movie is a waste of time. The story and implementation of it is terrible. Can’t believe this movie was nominated for an academy award, must have been a bad year for foreign movies. The only thing interesting out of this movie is seeing into the lives of poor and rich Peruvians.

A few pals will be dismayed by my impressions about this much-praised film, but I found its narrative somewhat weak, largely incomplete, and more than a bit pretentious. Before you can be oblique and suggestive you need to know how to relate a straightforward tale, and the impression Ms Llosa leaves one with is of trying to skip a few stages in tale-telling, such attending to the basic narrative, yet trying to convey presumably profound insights. While it leaves undisclosed the question of the lead's acting strengths, the Peruvian Serrana maid's stony silence is utterly realistic, and so effective as to leave a lingering impression. Yet gaps in the narrative remain, and the promise of the interesting premise - the breastmilk of the daughter of a rape is somehow cursed - is left unfulfilled.
