When teenager Allison Glenn is sent to prison for a heinous crime, she leaves behind her reputation as Linden Falls' golden girl forever. Her parents deny the existence of their once-perfect child. Her former friends exult her downfall. Her sister, Brynn, faces whispered rumors every day in the hallways of their small Iowa high school. It's Brynn--shy, quiet Brynn--who carries the burden of what really happened that night. All she wants is to forget Allison and the past that haunts her.

But then Allison is released to a halfway house, and is more determined than ever to speak with her estranged sister.

Now their legacy of secrets is focused on one little boy. And if the truth is revealed, the consequences will be unimaginable for the adoptive mother who loves him, the girl who tried to protect him and the two sisters who hold the key to all that is hidden.

What garbage. The positive: it read quickly. The negatives: what I read was the most poorly-written, ridiculously contrived (could there have been any more laughable coincidences?), repetitive nonsense around. The story was told from different characters' points of view in alternating chapters, but Gudenkauf doesn't have the skill to pull off the distinct voices needed to make that format work. The contrivances of the bulk of the novel were only outdone by the overwrought, operatic melodrama of the ending. Don't waste your time with this.

Very quick and easy read. Loved the different perspectives of the different characters.

This book has a lot of twists & turns so you have to keep reading to find out the surprise ending. Awesome book.

A suspenseful, quick read mystery/thriller. The author has different characters narrate different chapters but it seems to work okay. Definitely kept me reading to find out what happens, though some is pretty unbelievable. Good twists and turns. Excellent summer read (read it while camping).

After 90 pages I just couldn't read this book any longer. It was boring and the one secret they started out with quickly becomes known and it isn't that surprising, so I don't know what could be left. I just gave up.

An "issue driven" narrative. The mystery will keep you reading, but you must suspend logic to believe some of the situations and inconsistent characters.

An engaging story of baby abandonment and adoption that unfolds gradually and ends unpredictably.

Good book, easy read. Much like a Jodi Picoult novel.
