Everything Was Good-bye centers around Meena, a young Indo Canadian woman growing up in the lower mainland of British Columbia and traces her life as she struggles to assert her independence in a Punjabi community. Raised by her tradition bound widowed mother, Meena knows the freedoms of her Canadian peers can never be hers, but unlike her sisters, she is reluctant to submit to a life that is defined by a suitable marriage. Though a narrative moving between race and culture, it is ultimately a story of love, loss and self acceptance amidst shifting cultural ideals.

This book traces the life of Meena, an Indo-Canadian girl growing up in the Lower Mainland, from teenager to married woman. In between these years, Meena struggles with racism, family conflicts, domestic abuse, but also encounters love and hope. Paramount to the novel is Meena’s dilemma over her own identity as she tries to find a balance between being true to herself, and the pressure to conform to society’s expectations. She wants to fit in, be accepted, remain loyal to family, culture, and tradition, yet social and other pressures inexplicably and sometimes tragically will not allow this simple wish to be fulfilled. This is a well-constructed story, the pain and tension often undercut by clever humour, and populated with ordinary, credible people. I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next – couldn’t put it down! (submitted by RB)

"Everything was Good-bye" was not bad but it wasn't great, either. A story with too little plot, it was a romance smothered in molasses: sickly sweet and slow moving. Even the death scene was ho-hum; a case of manslaughter and not murder. There are better and more lively reads than this novel.
