At the end of WWII, 60 minutes of raw film in an East German archive was discovered. Shot by the Nazis in Warsaw in May of 1942, the film became a resource for historians seeking an authentic record of the Warsaw Ghetto. The later discovery of a long-missing reel, including multiple takes and cameramen staging scenes, complicated earlier readings of the footage. Presented is the raw footage in its entirety, falsely showing the 'good life' of Jewish urbanites. Included is an interview, and more.

This film synopsis of the Nazi collection is startling. Survivors provider their feedback to the film that is being shown. If you are an avid historian of World War II films, you may see similar scenes portrayed. It is eerie to see the cinematography mirror these sort of documentary films that were created by the Nazis.

Germans created a documentary museum piece for the Jews whom they expected to exterminate soon - failed to hear the approaching Red Army which had similar designs for them.

This film is almost exclusively Warsaw Ghetto film. Some scenes narrated, some not. Note: hard to see the subtitles on a widescreen TV and without the translation subtitles, a lot of the film is lost.

I knew a little about the Warsaw Ghetto because of the uprising there in 1943. However I have never seen such extensive footage of the interior of the Ghetto. Nor did I know of the existence of this staged propaganda footage, shot by the Germans and intended to portray Jews as uncaring by juxtaposing wealthy and well-fed Jews (often brought in from elsewhere) with the poor and the starving. I was shocked by the level of malnutrition, with people looking as if they were already in the death camps. Contemporary documents and reports, and the reaction to the footage of survivors who were children in the Ghetto, add to the emotional impact of the film, as do Nazi statistics such as eggs being allowed into the ghetto at a number which worked out to be one fifth of an egg per person per month. Also worth watching is Billy Wilder's 22 minute documentary of the Allies liberating the death camps, and forcing local German civilians to do a tour of them. Any Holocaust deniers should have their eyelids pegged open and be forced to watch this DVD.

An excellent documentary.
Horrifying truth like I have not seen it before. I will certainly not forget this; and I recommend this film to high school students and up.
Unbelievable what the human heart is capable of doing to his fellow man. Do not watch it too late in the evening or you will not be able to sleep well. Yes, this film will haunt you for days; and you will never forget what you saw.

Good - The late Andy Rooney commented how in his early years as a journalist condemned WWII because of his pacifist inclinations but after being one of the first to visit the concentration camps, he admitted that there really are "just" wars. The documentary itself is well made but extremely disturbing; about the Warsaw ghetto in which half a million Jews were forced to live with "little" food to survive during the Nazi reign. There's a short film directed by Billy Wilder that is included in the "special features" section of the DVD you should watch if you wish to know more about the most horrific time of the 20th century. Warning about the special feature and the film itself - very disturbing scenes that will haunt you for days afterwards.

Footage in ghetto worth viewing, but I wish documentaries wouldn't use music to tell the viewer how to feel.

While watching the movie, I couldn't help but suspect that the filmmakers used the commentary, re-enactments and shots of survivors to pad the film.

In hindsight, I would have preferred to just see the original footage without all the extras.

Having said that, the original footage is horrifying, and immensely important historically.

Humanity is capable of inflecting far worse on itself than can be made up.
