The beginning of the book is very intriguing and a side of history that is not well explored in history books. However, I was slightly mortified when animals were being disemboweled just to see if she had endurance.

The words the author chooses are lovely and you get a very clear picture of the world in which our heroine, Minna, lives. However, there was not enough dialogue for my taste and often we were left with Minna's morbid thoughts and sexual desires for pages upon pages upon pages which, I can't help but say it, started to seem like an artsy fartsy version of Twilight. There were also many elements that were unexplained, such as Minna's "itch," and whether it was masturbation or really just an infection... Additionally the other characters were no well developed, leaving me to feel that Jacob was a lopsided, immature child whose age I forgot because he did not act like it, and Samuel to be this cold hearted prick that Minna was only attracted to because he was of closer age than his father.

All in all, it was a good read and gave an interesting view of the Jewish westward movement and the challenges they faced, such as eating non-kosher slices of meat or starving.

Interesting read about a young woman hoping for a better life, and the challenges that she faces. I don't know if I could be so accommodating! The things women used to have to go through to be 'provided' for. Interesting story for a first time writer.
