The author argues that, beginning in the fifteenth century, the West developed six powerful "killer applications" that the "Rest" of civilization lacked: competition, science, the rule of law, modern medicine, consumerism, and the work ethic. These innovations allowed the West to leap ahead of the Rest, and a dozen Western empires came to control the vast majority of mankind and the world economy.

A must read (listen?) for people who are interested in industrial revolution, colonization, rise of western civilization, etc
This books mentions the factors which helped European nations to flourish far better than their non european counterparts during 18th and 19th centuries.
