A mysterious drifter and a young Japanese warrior arrive in a town that has been terrorized by outrageous and virulent criminals. Each is obsessed with his separate mission, and both will be guided by the wisdom of the Bartender at the Horseless Horseman Saloon. The two eventually join forces to bring down the corrupt and contemptuous reign of Nicola, the awesomely evil 'woodcutter' and his lady Alexandra, a femme fatale with a secret past.

Horrible. Really bad mixture of cartoon sets and live actors.

This is a weird combination of fantasy western/samurai fare that will leave you scratching your head wondering if you should like or hate it. My vote is on the former. Bunraku is odd at times but once the story is underway you will come to enjoy the creative fight sequences as well as the presence of the always charismatic Ron Perlman. The final fights were disappointing (what a letdown on the penultimate fight!) but even still it's worth a rental if you have nothing better to do.

Very colorful !,.. sometimes tooo much so. Over-styled ?
"A stranger comes to town" , (and cleans up),.. but with two lead 'heros' , Japanese and Western ,.. perhaps to bost box office ($) appeal ? The review by lasertravis (see below) sez it best,..

I gave this movie 3 stars for originality. The action sequences are heavily choreographed and stylish. The backdrops are pretty and stylish. In the vein of The Warrior's Way, but I didn't like it as much. The story and the characters didn't grab me like they did in that movie. Worth watching if you enjoy stylish action movies like Sin City or The Spirit. Has a real Frank Miller quality to it, though not as CGI heavy or as well done.
