I've always like Julie Delpy. This is no exception, the countess has a hot and cold character. Delpy seems to favor willful roles. To me, its rather scary story even thought from the start from her childhood she's cruel. She's a murderer no different then a vampire. She killed people but didn't drink the blood. There's also feminist views inserted into the movie. What if she's a man not a woman, maybe she can get away with murders? Can a woman have the same powers as man if she's upper class?

Sorry, but I thought that this was just a vanity film, which Ms. Delpy, like Countess Bathory, saw things that others do not see. Slow with a turgid, mishmash of acting styles & intentions and vainglorious direction, I wanted to turn it off, but for some reason, kept watching. Maybe it was my mood, or that I watched it after the Oscars, but I did not find this film enticing.

I thought it was pretty good. I love historical movies and I did look this woman up on WIkipedia. Although I'm sure there were some inaccuracies (see first comment), the basic story seems to be correct. I thought it was fascinating as I had never heard of this person or these events before. I did think the movie was a bit slow in spots-they drug some scenes out for artistic purposes, I think. I didn't need that, but overall I enjoyed the movie. IT's available for free if you are on Amazon Prime.

Too many liberties were taken with historical facts available. For example, according to this movie, Bathory starts her bloody adventures after her husband's death, as well as her affair with Istvan. According to records, Nadasdy was part of her sadistic practices and might have been the initiator of the legend. Overall, this movie is an unhappy marriage of gore and Friedrich-like romanticism, however a lot better than most "historical" films those days.

French actress Julia Delpy wrote, directed and starred in this movie based on the notorious Hungarian countess, Elizabeth Bathory. Imprisoned in a cell in her own castle, the movie details the crimes she commited. Over 200 young girls were murdered on her orders so she could bathe in their blood because she believed it kept her appearance young looking. It was a nice psychological touch that whenver Elizabeth looked in a mirror, she saw herself as much older than she was. And of course, after bathing in blood, the audience sees no difference, to her, she looks 10 years younger. Not a bad movie, but not destined to be a classic. Also, given it's subject matter, it is not as gory as one would thing.
