I'm a fan of classic horror, but The Thing From Another World is laughably cheesy and not scary at all. The Thing itself looks more like a Universal monster than a Lovecraftian horror, and the "scientists" are total imbeciles.

Agree with Bazooka_Joe...except its not my favourite because the third ones stick to how the actual book explains "The Thing" but I assume that is more to do with our visual capabilities.
Either way, definately a must watch for those who love either of the newer ones. To think this nearly never got made...

I have now seen all 3 versions of "The Thing", and, by far, this solid, 1951, original version is the absolute best of the lot. There's no question about it.

Yes. "The Thing" may not have had a big budget, or any wild, over-the-top visual effects, but it certainly made up for any lack of these elements by its excellent production values, its well-scripted storyline, and its superb performances by a first-rate cast.

I would easily rate this film as one of the truly great Sci-Fi classics of all-time. More than 60 years later it still remains a masterpiece of 1950s film-making. This is the sort of horror story that relies on the unseen rather than the seen for its power, and, as such, it is almost nerve-racking in its sustained suspense.

"The Thing's" story concerns a group of Arctic researchers at a remote army radar station who discover a huge, frozen spaceman inside a crash-landed UFO. When this "visitor" finally emerges from its icy captivity the group of humans find that they must now fight for their very lives.

Creepy and very suspenseful, this a genuine classic! Unlike John Carpenter's remake, it focuses more on the psychological perspective of the situation... and good thing too, since the monster itself isn't all that frightening once you see it. But even so, this is a great science fiction movie that delivers the chills.

Most of the old films in my collection are science fiction and horror. And one of the things they all have in common is a good story and cast that brings the movie to life, without the special visual effects. Just good old story telling. This movie is a very good example of this. Watching this movie on my HOMETHEATER, which makes a more theater like atmosphere, had my complete attention. I like the story and the characters. And i couldn't wait for the "THING" to appear. One of my favorite old school movies!!! I'm giving this movie 5 stars!!! For a good scary story, good cast, and an ok looking monster, even though you can tell it's a man in a scary outfit. Hagen Daze Vanilla swiss almond icecream, coke, and the lights down low.

One of the many reasons why i like old science fiction movies is because they depend on a good cast that brings the story to life. This film is a good example of good story telling without much speacial effects to rely on. I would still recommend that you watch this on your HOMETHEATER. Even though there's not much for sound freaks, it's still sounds so much better on your system. I enjoyed this movie and it has been a part of my collection for a long time. It's one of my favorites!!! I give this movie 4 and a half stars. A very good story and good cast. Plus, i like the monster. Grilled cheese and ham, potato chips, and gingerale soda.

This is my favorite sci-fi film of all time. Did you know three different actors played the part of The Thing in this film. In addition to James Arness the other two were needed in the scene when he starts to melt down. Also, George Federman, Groucho Marx's announcer from You Bet Your Life was in this movie.
