'The Lover' takes as its inspiration the little-known but real-life case of Gordon Cummins, a young airman who murdered four women in the West End of London during World War 2. A noir novel in the vein of Graham Greene, it looks at how the pressures of war may lead people to lose their moral compass.

Set during the Blitz, and the description of that is realistic and interesting. Otherwise tightly plotted and well-paced.
