Of all the leading, Hollywood actors whose heyday was the 1960s - It is James Garner who ranks right up there as being one of my all-time favourites.
Rugged, masculine, likeable, and with a good sense of humour - I view Garner's screen-persona as being that of a "natural man" who never put on any airs of pretentiousness.
In this pleasant-to-read biography (sans gossip and scandal) - Garner fondly recalls (amongst other things) his days in Hollywood hobnobbing with other well-known celebrities.
Sad to say - On July 19, 2014 - James Garner (86 at the time) died of a heart-attack.
Just started this book. Enjoyed James Garner in his movies and on his television series. "Maverick," Nicoles', and "The Rockford Files." This is an ebook.
Just finished this great ebook. Mr Garner was a very good actor in my opinion. I do miss him.
Very low-key. Not the bio you want if you're looking for dirt-digging and scandals.
If you like James Garner on the screen, you will enjoy this bio. You can hear his voice in the rhythm of his words and he is very like (in most things) the characters he played. He is direct, loyal, caring, etc. "A sweetheart," says Julie Andrews and who am I to argue with her? No scandals discussed here. If Jim leaves you tepid you could skip this bio unless you have a passion for golf and/or race cars (there is a lot of ink devoted to each). Garner stands up to bullies (e.g. Universal Studios) but has nothing but good to say of his cohorts on and behind the set.
Love the Actor. Love the book.
A very good read that isn't your typical biography. Have always admired his work as an actor and his stands on various causes during the years.
Loved the self rating of his movies which you don't see many actors do. Was surprised at some of his comments but it tells you a lot about the type of person he is.
A good read. It's nice to know that there are people in Hollywood with integrity and the courage of their own convictions. Jim Garner is a thoroughly decent human being who stands up for what he thinks is right and for the underdog. He would be a pleasure to know.
Amusing and gives you a portrait of the man, but not very detailed and rather impersonal.
