The film starts off engaging and funny. A group of cosseted middle-class boys in a gated community ("colony" in Hinglish) harass orphan newcomer Fatka and his dog Bheedu, who work as cleaners of the colony residents' cars and sleep in an abandoned (but picturesque) blue Volks under a shady tree. Of course, the boys quickly regret their cruelty and embrace the orphan into their gang, but the film starts going downhill from here. It turns into a typically preachy, condescending middle-class take on poor people, portraying them as wise saints whose sole purpose in life is to teach the privileged to be grateful for what they have. When the evil politician enters the story, the sanctimonious preachiness reaches a fever pitch. The middle class boys become the heroes who fight for the rights of the downtrodden (surprise). It's a shame because the film could've been a lighthearted entertainer about childhood friendship across class lines. Instead, it's a self-satisfied morality tale that reinforces class privilege and inequality.
