The author of the New York Times bestselling The Little Giant of Aberdeen County returns with a magic-tinged tale of dreams, family secrets, and betrayals on a New England salt farm.

In the isolated Cape Cod village of Prospect, the Gilly sisters are as different as can be. Jo, a fierce and quiet loner, is devoted to the mysteries of her family's salt farm, while Claire is popular, pretty, and yearns to flee the salt at any cost. But the Gilly land hides a dark legacy that proves impossible to escape. Although the community half-suspects the Gilly sisters might be witches, it doesn't stop Whit Turner, the town's wealthiest bachelor, from forcing his way into their lives. It's Jo who first steals Whit's heart, but it is Claire--heartbroken over her high school sweetheart--who marries him.

Years later, estranged from her family, Claire finds herself thrust back onto the farm with the last person she would have chosen: her husband's pregnant mistress. Suddenly, alliances change, old loves return, and new battle lines are drawn. What the Gilly sisters learn about each other, the land around them, and the power of the salt, will not only change each of their lives forever, it will also alter Gilly history for good.

Tiffany Baker can spin a story: there's something quiet and beautiful in her writing that gently pulls you along into the ever-darkening, slightly gothic world of a New England's salt farm. If you like Alice Hoffman and Sarah Addison Allen, try this.

Entertaining read -- however as a cat lover I had a hard time with the matter of fact way the killing of the feral kittens was done (mercifull or not).

What kind of name is Icicle for a beautiful white spirited and willing horse? Not much suspense here for me - the bad people get theirs and there is a happy ending.

Interesting story of sisters who aren't sisters and the hard work of salt farming. I was never sure why the members of the Turner family so desperately wanted the salt farm. But it did make me want to know more about salt farming.

patron review:

Mystery, past, present, mixed to tell the story of two sisters. Mistakes, love, hate, accidents...great ending.

What happens when a scorned wife takes her husband's pregnant teenage mistress and moves in with her estranged sister on a failing salt farm? Tiffany Baker's spare, luminous tale "The Gilly Salt Sisters", which kept me spellbound with its multiple tensions, tinges of magic, and masterful use of metaphor. It's a little slow to start, but stay with it --- the ending will reward your efforts.

Such a wonderful read. What the heck does a girl from Seattle know about salt marshes in Cape Cod? Alot more now since I finished this book. I stayed completely engaged and engrossed in this story to the very end,

A lovely book that made me want to pack my bags and head to Cape Cod to stand on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean and smell the sea wind.
