Four contend for power over the Iron Throne and the Land of the Seven Kingdoms; alliances shift, and betrayal is always an option. House Lannister's head, Joffrey, rules uneasily. Joffrey's enemy, Lord Stannis, is disgraced and enthralled. Robb of House Stark still rules the North, implacable in his enmity towards his Lannister foes, even as they hold his sister hostage. And the exiled queen Daenerys, mistress of the world's last three dragons, makes her way across a blood-drenched continent. But as opposing forces maneuver for the final titanic showdown, there appears an army of barbaric wildlings, led by undead Others. The unpredictable violence of a final cataclysm is inevitable; the one certain thing is that many men will die upon many swords.

This one was starting to wear on me, so much misfortune to so many…and, as others have noted, so long. Even though I was listening to the audio version, I found myself skimming (hitting that "advance 15-second button" during the overly-detailed descriptions of clothing or feasts.

I haven't seen the television series, so I came to this book series with no expectations other than the desire to be in on the popular culture phenomena and to be able to discuss it with my daughter and nephew.

I read a lot of science fiction and high fantasy so know the genre well. This is, to be sure, good and has some excellent world-building (especially in regards to Daenerys and the Wildings), but I am not the rabid fan that many are. There's so much great work out there; read it all!

The audiobooks continue to be utter brilliance and a delight to listen to.

A slow first half but a really exciting second half!

So many surprises; some were beautifully foreshadowed and others so poorly that the character deaths were hard to accept. The explanations of past events read like footnotes periodically, but I had no other complaints. The characters are distinct and intriguing, and the plot, always engaging.

More of the same here from Martin. Lots of politics, backstabbing, and main character killing. Looooooong. The only characters I care about at this point are Jon Snow, Tyrion, and Daenerys making the rest of the story hard to sit through. Roy Dotrice is still a great narrator.
