The adventures of four misfit children begin with the arrival of strangers in town. But it’s the children who are viewed with suspicion. In a town in which the weird happens yet oddity is feared, threat and terror are introduced right from the start. How, then, is the reader supposed to be intimidated? The author burdens herself with this difficult task but manages to surmount it by clever misdirection, oddball characters and the setting up of a mystery whose true nature is unfolded in bits and pieces until its full horror is revealed only at the very end. In spite of its intended target age group, I found myself absolutely enthralled in its spooky story, reading it in practically one sitting. Age old in its warnings about picking your enemies, letting go of hatreds and the kindness of strangers, “Skary Childrin” gives us a new breed of her(oin)es, kids who learn that there’s more to getting along than fitting in and being popular.
