Qiu Xiaolong's Anthony Award-winning debut introduces Inspector Chen of the Shanghai Police.

A young "national model worker," renowned for her adherence to the principles of the Communist Party, turns up dead in a Shanghai canal. As Inspector Chen Cao of the Shanghai Special Cases Bureau struggles to trace the hidden threads of her past, he finds himself challenging the very political forces that have guided his life since birth. Chen must tiptoe around his superiors if he wants to get to the bottom of this crime, and risk his career--perhaps even his life--to see justice done.

Qui is a great writer and mystery writer. The case Chen and Yu worked on was really the backdrop of the novel. Det. Chen and his cohorts and collaborators are very interesting people and the way him and Offr. Yu interview persons of interest is very sly. Their personal lives keep you hooked too. I can't wait to read the next of many more I see he's written.

I concur on Jifilby's comments. Fascinating inside story of Chinese culture and the ongoing impact of the the cultural revolution and Mao into the 1990's when the story takes place. Inspector Chen is a great character and I hope to read more books with him in it. A very good detective novel overall.

Fascinating story that drags you to China to see how the society really operates. Visits to China have peaked my interest in the culture and the people. This book enhanced my view of the country and the actions as we read what the government want us to know in the west on how things operate. The characters are believable and the story has the twists of a master detective novel. I can not wait for more of Inspector Chen.
