While on holiday break in 1913, George Sawle brings his Cambridge schoolmate, Cecil Valance, to his family's small home outside of London. George's sixteen-year-old sister, Daphne, is smitten with Cecil, who writes a poem in her autograph book. After Cecil perishes in the Great War and with his reputation in tatters, the general public becomes aware of the poem and it is celebrated with critical acclaim.
