Martin Sheen's finest performance on film. He completely captures the character of Kit. The KCLS review below has a very astute review of the movie. I couldn't even come close to such a great review. "Badland" is not to be missed by any lover of films!

Badlands was regarded as one of the great films of the 1970's. It was the first movie made by Terrance Malick. He only made 2 movies in the 70's, this one and the 1978 film Days of Heaven. Both films were praised for thier lyrical and romantic look in terms of locations and the beautiful scenery. Badlands is a very simple movie in terms of its plot. Basically it's about a strange and distured man named kit. He works as a garbage man but then is fired and because he cant find a regular job he decides to run away with his new girlfriend. And on their journey he just kills people by shooting them. The movie never explains why he does it, basically it's an observation of his behavior. Martin Sheen plays kit and he gives a great performance. It's one of those great character actor performances that great actors love to play. The way they change their voice and play someone totally different from themselves. Sissy Spacek plays his young girlfriend. She does narration for the film and she also gives a very good performance. She plays basically a young naive girl who just goes along with kit until she realizes he's crazy and doesnt want to be with him anymore. The performances, the scenery, the films poetic creepy score make badlands one of the best couple on the run movies ever.

If Badlands was supposed to be an exercise in proving to this viewer that character Kit Carruthers was, indeed, the stupidest psycho-killer on the entire face of this planet, then, yes, it succeeded in its task, commendably.

And, if Badlands was also out to prove that Kit's girl, Holly, was the most boring and apathetic accessory to his crimes, imaginable, then, once again, it accomplished its goal, admirably.

To say that Badlands could've (and should've) been a helluva lot better than it was would truly be an understatement of the highest order.

Filled-to-overflowing with demented dialogue, and endless "dead-air" moments, Badlands was, without question, one of those dimwitted stories that I swear they were just making it up as they went along.

Based on a true-crime story, or not - The only thing that this truly godawful picture earned its 1-star rating for was some really impressive camerawork (when it came to the awesome images of the wide-open country in South Dakota and Texas).

Baby-faced actors these 2 were (Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek) as they were just starting their film careers.

A dimwit "on-the-lam" story that I swear they were making up as they went along.

An American film classic- based on the real life killer Charles Starkweather.

Excellent film- Terence Malick's first and in my opinion his best. Stars Martin Sheen & Sissy Spacek- both outstanding- one of my all time favorite movies.

The original "Natural Born Killers". Sheen is excellent as the desensitized, sociopathic greaser 'Kit', and Spacek was a perfect choice for his bored, emotionless, teenage sidekick 'Holly'. It's too bad Warren Oates' character wasn't written in for a lengthier role. A solid piece from writer/director Terrence Malick.

Holly Sargis: (of Cato, Kit's gunshot friend): "How's he doin'?" Kit Carruthers: "...I got him in the stomach." Holly Sargis: "Is he upset?" Kit Carruthers: "He didn't say anything to me about it."
