The story of Nim, the chimpanzee who became the focus of a landmark 1970s experiment to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a human child. But as Nim's natural instincts take over and the humans trusted with his well-being fail to protect him, Project Nim uncovers the unflinching and extraordinary journey of one animal thrust into human society.

Painfully candid, critically important video.
Please note that the research shown here
is the most *benign* type of animal research.
Most animals used in research are treated
with far more cruelty and neglect.
(just think of rabbits having their eyelids sewn open
so that perfumes, anti-perpirants, and other needless products
can be sprayed into their eyes day after day...)

An important topic
that has been deliberately hidden
for much too long.

This is a very good (and sad) documentary. If you weren't an animal rights activist before ...

I would say this documentary is high in educational value but low in entertainment value. So you have to know what you are getting into. Lots of old video clips with grainy images. At the end what bothers me was the ignorance of some very highly educated people, and their attempt to convert an animal into a human. In doing so they put both animal and human lives at risk, and rid a chimp of a normal, animal life.

What a brave documentary. Opens up great discussion on animal-rights and scientific experiments. I really wasn't quite sure what the end result would be but certainly interesting to take the journey with Nim. Great behind-the-scenes too!

Great story about Nim, though it broke my heart through the entire movie. I am sad to think about what other animals are going through experiences like this one.

An awful, and amazing story, and a very very sad commentary on human beings. There is so much happiness and joy in this stroy and then virtually all of it is crushed by human cruelty in the form of irresponsibility and indiffernce.

Lots of drug references and swearing and masterbation talk... I'm not sure this was rated correctly. PARENTS TAKE NOTICE!

The documentary was well done. But the naivety of the researchers was appalling.

Great film. It is worth watching the extras, too. (Bob's story is really captivating; in the how they made the documentary, you learn they had a human dressed as a chimp for any scenes they needed film for, and where their sources of original film came from). The viewer is allowed to make their own conclusion about research on animals, on primate in particular, and how they might or might not want to judge the people that came forward and 'told it all', literally! Watch this!

"he never should have been taken away from his mother in the first place" is absolutely right.
