Hoping to distance himself from the fallout of a libel conviction, journalist Mikael Blomkvist retreats to a remote island in Sweden's far north where the unsolved murder of a young girl still haunts her industrialist uncle forty years later. Ensconced in a cottage on the island where the killer may still roam, Blomkvist's investigation draws him into the secrets and lies of the rich and powerful, and throws him together with one unlikely ally: tattooed, punk hacker, Lisbeth Salander.

Incredible thriller story with great acting of Daniel Craig and for sure the girl with the dragon tattoo. I also enjoyed the Swedish version very much.

Excellent mystery/thriller from Mr. Fincher. Quite intriguing and kept me engaged and interested throughout the movie. One star taken off for unnecessarily explicit rape and torture and some choppy editing.

Unfortunately I've never had the chance to read this incredible book, I've only watched the movie. I didn't know that the movie was based on a book but if I'd known I would have searched in all the libraries for it. This movie, or I should say the book, is one of my favourite crime stories. Agatha Christie is always first place when it comes to crimes and thrilling stories, but I always keep this movie in mind. It is about a girl who disappears and her grandfather, who was her closest family member. The girl's name is Harriet and something strange was happening in her life and she wanted to tell her grandfather but he told her to wait because he was busy. Harriet couldn't wait, so she left and never come back again. After 40 years, a journalist is curious to know what happened for her. I won't spoil the rest for you. I give this movie 8/10.

I liked this better than the Swedish version. It's different. And the brutality was not as viscerally disturbing (gratuitous, even) as the former.

Stayed with the original Swedish version, but the parts that didn't made no sense to me. Wouldnt recommend, just watch the Swedish version with either subtitled or dub - they aren't too distracting - on

Rooney Mara is superb! Can't believe she didn't win the Academy Award but I guess you can't beat Meryl Streep no matter what you do - she actually won for Iron Lady, if you can believe it! Daniel Craig is also VERY good, making you wonder, "James Who?" by the end of the film...Really excellent take on the book EXCEPT STUPID ENDING!!! WHY OH WHY tack on an ending not in either book or previous movie that was extraneous, melodramatic and completely out of keeping with the character Lisbeth? Fabulous, riveting movie with maddening ending - 5 stars but for that.

As a re-make this version is very well done. But if you have already seen the original Swedish version, then this US version may or may not be relevant. Your call.

Fantastic, totally riveting movie. The characters are compelling, the performances are first rate, and the cinematography works excellently to enhance the story.

Really excellent, but not for kids!!

Mara Rooney's performance is nuanced, multi-layered, and well rendered. I found her and her character incredibly compelling, and the story relatively straight-forward. It did not make sense to me why she would want to be sexual with Blomkvist--in fact, given her history, and the timing, that made absolutely no sense whatsoever.
I loved, absolutely loved, her focused revenge on the rapist/guardian. For such a bleak circumstance, she played the small, clear humorous touches wonderfully well.
I also think that Daniel Craig was a most interesting choice for Blomkvist--he played him small, not bombastic, and he let him be scared and mixed up and quite human. His performance also had an easy, smalled-down physical quality. I realize many Americans know him as James Bond, but his physical performance and presence here reminds me of his magnificent one in Love is the Devil ( a must-see, by the way).
I plan to see the Swedish version, but I will admit now that Noomi's performance as Lisbeth in "Hornet's Nest" was thin (as was the role, admittedly) and most dependent on externals. I don't think she is nearly the actor Rooney is.

I'm going to level here. I absolutely hated the book. It was slow and boring and ridiculous. The movie is better than the book, which doesn't take much and doesn't mean it's a good movie (it isn't.) The Swedish version is a lot better but in general, this is a terrible story about awful happenings with an incredibly boring main character (Blomkvist, not Lisbeth, Lisbeth is actually compelling but not enough to actually save this trainwreck.)
