The film is a bit black-and-white in its portrayal of events (never once do Federales soldiers bat an eye as they execute their heinous deeds, Cristeros are nearly all noble, or at least die nobly), but it works extremely well as a fictionalized account of a little-known period of Mexican history. Very worth watching if you can handle the inevitable harrowing experience of any war movie. While not particularly gruesome, For Greater Glory does not flinch from portraying the unsparing nature of warfare, and the sometimes ruthless path of history.

Brutal socialist government of Mexico in the 20's tries to destroy religious freedom. Christians fight back. Death toll 90,000,

This is a very good film that deserved a much larger cinematic audience. Ten of thousands of real-life Mexicans died in La Cristiada. The film tells the story of a struggle for freedom waged by every day people and some parish priests against an overbearing government.

This is not a movie 'for Catholics'. In fact, in the film and the real life events it portrays the institutional Roman Catholic church did not acquit itself well. The 'conversion' of a member of the elite--General Enrique Gorostieta--to the struggle was very interesting and deftly portrayed by Andy Garcia. It's too bad the film couldn't also devote more time to Anacleto González Flores.

Fascinating movie about relatively recent Mexican history (1926-1929) of which I was not aware.

Interesting and well made film about conflict between political and religious powerhouses. Andy Garcia puts in a strong performance, as does the rest of this fine cast. All boils down to political oppression against the masses in a classic good vs evil period piece in Mexico.

Good stuff.

This is an excellent movie. I recommend it for any Catholic. It is very sad that this period in Mexican history is almost forgotten. Hopefully this movie will help that.

True story? Like Hell! President Calles tried to implement the principles of the Mexican revolution and the Constitution of 1917, including having the Church pay taxes, and not participate in politics, etc. The Church wanted to keep its privileges. And this film is just Church propaganda. Even if relatively well made propaganda.

Wow! From the lack of reviews and
any other mention of this film I was thinking that it must be a low budget
"B" type film. WRONG! It cannot be characterized as a blockbuster, but
the whole production is first rate, and is one of the most worthwhile
movies that I have seen in years.
(A 1987 film called "Hope and Glory" ,of a totally different type of story, just reminded me that wonderful films don't need to come from Hollywood. Check that one out if you can find it.) Anyway, get this
movie,have a Kleenex handy, and
enjoy one of the best made films that most people will never hear of.

A sad but very true story that not only has been absent from American history, but was excised from Mexico's history books as well.
This movie is historically accurate.
well written, well acted, and totally
ignored by Hollywood and our own
"Main Stream Media". The time frame is 1926-1929, and for those
who recognise the current day
attack on the Catholic Church in
the USA, this is a chilling reminder
that a determined secular government can enact laws of such
strict and terrible nature that almost
no reasonable person could imagine the consequences. Fast
forward;2013: Drones anyone?

Sexual Content: Nothing really of note. A man and his wife converse while in bed. Women tie ammunition belts on under their clothes.

Other: This is just plain not a movie for children. The story is brutal and harrowing, though very worth telling.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: My 'Violent Content' notice has already made clear this is not a move for children or even necessarily teens. Particularly of note are the torture and death of a teenaged combatant, the hanging of another, the bloody death of one Cristero who takes on a machine gun, a man who is shot in the head, and scenes of people holding or weeping over dead relatives.

Violence: Countless horses and riders gunned realistically (and sometimes bloodily) down, hangings, implied deaths of a number of civilians on a burning train, mostly offscreen torture of a teenager, executions by firing squad including of an elderly priest.
