The illustrations are gorgeous and set in the Shah's Iran. This story is Cinderella with a twist. *** SPOILER ALERT*** I don't know the academic/thematic name for the twist but I see it a lot in children's stories. I don't know that it began with Frau Holle. I've found it everywhere, in every culture. A deserving person encounters a beggar or hermit, usually unpleasant or strange, is helpful and kind and generous, and is rewarded. Then an undeserving person tries to get the same reward but fails due to not being a genuinely good person. This version of this story is extra beautiful, not just the illustrations, but because of the heroine, Shiraz. Wonderful book!!!!!
