Boring, enough said

Aug 25, 2016

This was hard to follow and even once I understood what was going on, it was just boring. Years ago a cop murdered in cold blood a child-killer who got off on a technicality. Now he works as a PI. The mayor, who covered up the murder, hires him to follow his cheating wife who is holding secret meetings with the campaign manager of his opponent. He goes back to the mayor with the photos and the campaign manager whom his wife was seeing is found murdered. Turns out she was not cheating. She was getting evidence against her husband committing crimes against the city in his real estate dealings. It's hard to make real estate exciting, folks. This was just boring.

Mark Wahlberg takes time out from his action films to delve into film noir, but without the real style of the old black and white noirs. It was a tad formulaic, but I do give the producers credit for not making this another senseless shootout and chase film.

This was a solid movie. I had higher hopes given the cast and the story set up. I definitely didn't feel it was a waste of time - I was entertained and enjoyed it for sure. Just not the best I've seen.

this is the first of what I hope will be a good career for russell and wahlberg! These two feed of the charisma of each other in this film--a bent cop and a mayor who is worse than the cop, make for a n exciting film, here!

A plausible plot, but it's a one actor film. Everything lights up when Russell Crowe walks onto the screen, but he alone can't carry this film across the finish line. More could have been made from this script. As others have commented, the film leaves the feeling that everybody just wanted to get it over with.

OK crime drama flick centered on political corruption.

Entertaining but not particularly suspenseful or surprising, as I had anticipated. Wahlberg was effective as former NYC detective, but Crowe's NY accent was awful and Catherine Zeta-Jones was barely a factor in this movie. Still, not a bad watch, if you don't expect too much from it.

Rated 5/10.

Good cast and a script that seems very timely considering what's happening with Toronto City Council these days. The weak point for me was the storyline between Mark Wahlberg's character and his girlfriend. There is a very strange scene where she publicly complains about their relationship yet the viewer is given no indication prior that the relationship was in trouble, in fact quite the opposite.
