For seven long years, Jacob has labored to earn the right to marry beautiful Rachel. Now the seven years are up, but Rachel's devious father substitutes his elder daughter on the wedding night. One of the greatest love stories from the Bible.

Jacob has a couple of strikes against it: it's an international co-production, with an entertaining mix of accents and acting styles, and it stars Matthew "Bland" Modine, and Lara Flynn "Botox" Boyle. Factors in its favour: one of the more interesting, and at least slightly elevating Bible stories, and its director is, improbably, Sir Peter Hall (compare with his King Lear.) Sure, the plotting and counter-plotting is farcical, but endears us to the characters, and makes them seem more probable. If you have ever lived in a small, backwards town, you know what I mean. MPAA rating: PG, for minor smiting.
