It's a week before Christmas when wealthy businessman Tom Underwood disappears into thin air -- with more than enough people wanting him dead. New police recruit Kala Stonechild, who has left her northern Ontario detachment to join a specialized Ottawa crime unit, is tasked with returning Underwood home in time for the holidays. Stonechild, who is from a First Nations reserve, is a lone wolf who is used to surviving on her wits. Her new boss, Detective Jacques Rouleau, has his hands full controlling her, his team, and an investigation that keeps threatening to go off track. Old betrayals and complicated family relationships brutally collide when love turns to hate and murder stalks a family.

I can't wait to read the rest of the series. This is full of interesting characters, an excellent, suspenseful mystery, and familiar landmarks. The investigation by new cop Kayla and her superior officer is well-conducted and makes total sense. The subplots and side characters are engaging. I haven't been so excited since I started reading Giles Blunt, several years ago. Great Canadian flavour.

I am glad to have found another Canadian mystery author whose other books I would like to read. Chapman's writing is wonderful. I thought having a First Nation female detective was very different.

Really enjoyed the book. Story line is based in Ottawa. Found it a great read as the story unfolded around the city of Ottawa and surrounding area. As Kayla did her murder investigation, she traveled all over the city and surrounding are. It felt like it was I driving around the city! A little slow in the middle, but enjoyable non the less.

I started this book yesterday and stayed up way too late reading because I HAD to finish it. Chapman does an excellent job of creating characters that are believable and individual, a plot that is convincing, and a story that drew me in and kept me engrossed. I look forward to more stories involving Kala Stonechild and Jacques Rouleau.

I am not generally a reader of mysteries or police procedurals, but this one had me hooked after the first few pages. In fact the sense of dread in the first chapter is almost overwhelming, but the pacing kept me moving through those first scenes.

The characters in the story are compelling -- in particular Kala Stonechild, the First Nations cop who is on the trail of the killer. Despite the fact that you don't learn very much about her background, she is a character you want to know more about, and that, combined with the slow unravelling of the story leading to the murder, combine to build a very satisfying read.

It was also great to read a story based in Ottawa, where I live -- and to imagine the activities of the characters in the neighbourhoods and landmarks I know so well.

I was also completely surprised by the identity of the killer, which is always satisfying when you are reading a mystery.

Highly recommended and I look forward to the next Stonechild/Rouleau mystery!

A raw beginning that gets you in the gut and begs for resolution, this novel presents an interesting premise for a new police procedural with memorable characters, realistic story development and an unapologetic Ottawa setting. I found myself shooing my boys off to bed every evening so that I could just get back to this book and find out what where this case would go next. Looking forward to the next Kala Stonechild.
