As an art historian loving Chagall's work, i expected to love this novel. i sincerely enjoyed it, but it was, on occasion, painfully obvious that this was a debut book: sometimes the author tried just too hard to be witty. As an writer myself, I know it is hard not to be over the top! Also, there were at least 5 common typos in the book that should have been caught by a proof-reader:
Also, I can't say, without giving away the plot, why I think there were just too many coincidences to be believable. Fantasy lets you stretch the reader's belief, but i kept wondering why there were so many Chagall lovers in one place at one time!
I must say, though, having worked in museums much of my life, there is rarely an "acquisitions" dept.--that would be handled by the registrar or probably by the senior curator (or "keeper" outside of the U.S.) in a smaller museum. Also: a long-missing piece from an artist's oeuvre would be really suspicious just slipped into whomever's office, and a lot of research done before accepting such an "anonymous" gift!

And, lastly, I really despair of the common trick these days of changing points of view from chapter to chapter; it really sometimes gets confusing. I am from the "old school" of keeping one point of view during the whole book and my teacher/mentor would have thrashed me for going back & forth!

All that aside, I still recommend this book to art lovers, as she has done her homework and knows Chagall & the story of his missing paintings very well.

As a p.s., I have gone through the process of fighting a foreclosure as Phoebe did, and her comments about the bank's slipshod handling of papers, etc., made me laugh out loud!

Entertaining story- a little art history, crime, France, a romance and a ghost
