Weaving together a story of Nepalese family life, modern technology, and a tiny bit of mythology, Chandra's Magic Light has much to recommend it.
As with most books published by Barefoot, there is also lots of great information about Nepal in the back-- and even directions for making your own solar-powered pizza oven! Ages 5 and up.

Great way to expose kids to other cultures and ways of life. A nice story with colourful pictures.
