“Why is it people think you'll take bad news better if you're sitting down?”
“You seek resolutions and explanations because you're young. But you will understand this one day.”
Carol: What a strange girl you are.
Theres: Why?
Carol: Flung out of space.
(Exact same quote in the book as movie.)
===
Therese: I don't know what I want. How could I know what I want if I say yes to everything?
===
Carol: Happy New Year.
Thereset: Happy New Year.
Carol: Harge and I never spend New Year's Eve together. There's always a business function, always clients to entertain.
Therese: I've always spent it alone. In crowds. ... I'm not alone this year.
===
Carol: And do you live alone, Therese Belivet?
Therese: Well, there's Richard. He'd like to live with me. Oh no, it's nothing like that, I mean he'd like to marry me.
Carol: I see... And would you like to marry him?
Therese: Well, I barely even know what to order for lunch.
===
Carol: Now, there was a time... when I would have done almost anything, I would have locked myself away... to keep Rindy with me. But what use am I to her... to us, if I'm living against my own grain?

But the treatment is lavish. Fabulously crafted to create a vivid portrait of the two main characters. These kind of people do these kinds of things. We buy their humanity.
Unfortunately, for me, it is probably the source material that is responsible for the near blowhards these woman are not willing to serve. Shocking to use that word, but I haven't dropped the notion that couples should be helpmates to each other. Maybe things have changed. What created some doubt for me are a scene or two when I was wondering what drove the choice to have people just about yelling at each other. I could hear the lines more sincerely delivered in a more measured tone.
I realize class difference is an element, but wouldn't someone be a little uncomfortable in that heavy fur for so many scenes?
Music is very good (Burwell).
By the end of the movie I had recalled the old song, 'First You Say You Do, Then You Don't'. Unfortunately, that theme might last a lifetime.
Beautiful cinematography and superb acting tells the story of a forbidden but powerful love set in the 1950’s. The movie moves a little slowly but I feel the subtle storyline was necessary here. It wouldn’t have felt right to have rushed the characters into a relationship when there was a lot at stake for Carol.
Exquisite and nearly perfect in every aspect: script, direction, acting, costume, montage. Should have received Oscars.
I found this movie absorbing and I enjoyed the period piece aspect. I did not find it too slow, but I can't agree with the rave reviews. I found it too predictable and old hat, nothing new.
If you are looking for action--fistfights, bullets zipping around--avoid this film at all costs. If on the other hand you are looking for a character study with motivations for the characters that we can understand, then this is for you. Blanchett brings loads of star power to the part but never imposes her will on the story. Mara is wistful and very moving. Paulson has only two scenes but makes them count. No character is caricatured.
I cannot agree with the negative reviews. Yes, the film is slow, but I liked the meticulous pacing. It gives you a good amount of time to get to know these women, who are slow to open up to one another. Blanchett and Mara give lovely performances. The whole thing felt like a Douglas Sirk romance like ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS.
Stylish production but very slow and boring. The movie was at least half over before something interesting happened, then it reverted right back to boring. I don't understand all the accolades for this film.
Film about two women, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, who have an affair. Set in the early 1950's, New York, but actually filmed in Cincinnati, Ohio, this film is a top notch production. Wonderful script, sets, cast, costumes, music and editing. Interesting to see how the idea of a woman being gay in the 1950's was dealt with. Really well done.
A wonderful, unconventional love story between two women. There is also the hidden layer of the ex husband and the custody battle for their child. What a beautiful movie and about love and life. I would highly recommend it.
A love story set around Christmas. This film is beautifully shot, with spot on costuming and cinematography. This love story, between the enchanting Carol and aspiring photographer Terese, is slow moving, but the pay off, and the consequences of the characters' love, are well worth the wait. I cannot recommend this film highly enough.
