"A fantastic woman" has a fantastic director. He approaches the themes / characters very thoughtfully. It is a wonderful skill to have.
You know how some movies are "too much"? Too sad, too happy, too violent, too gory, too silly, too sentimental, too disgusting (or shocking), etc. etc. Well, this director is the opposite, he crafted a movie with just the right amount of each theme.
The director is very neutral and factual in his approach, leaving the viewer to have the final word.
I did find the overall pace slow-ish, but there is a pay off at the end (final act).

Simple film about a transgender individual who is suddenly thrust into a situation where they may lose everything, with outsiders attempting to shut them out. Daniela Vega is hypnotizing to watch as she finds inner strength to fight back. The beauty of the film is truly watching her go from a comfortable existence within the protection of her boyfriend to having to become literally liberated and standing on her own two feet. The metaphor is not lost on the viewer, but Vega and director Sebastian Lelio accomplish it all with the most delicate touch. Easily a contender for best foreign picture.

I had reservations about watching a film depicting a transgender relationship but was very pleasantly surprised. You're not asked to make judgements and the sexual preferences of the protagonists aren't rubbed in your face. It's essentially a movie about unconditional love on the one hand, and love, or relationships, bound by all kinds of conditions and prejudices on the other. A very moving story, it had me gripped from start to finish. The acting is exceptional, the script beautifully crafted, direction spot on. No wonder it won best foreign film. In fact it once again highlights the stupidity of that Oscar category. Best film should be best film regardless of language, and this would have been a very strong contender.

Not good. It was slow pacing with a lot of unnecessary scenes and unanswered questions.

Unlike "Tangerine 2015" which was about the street culture of LA's Santa Monica and Highland neighborhood where the transgenders live, this film described a trans woman who must overcome social obstacles to the basic human right to grieve the sudden death of her lover/partner. Also enjoyed Lelio's previous film, another woman centric story "Gloria 2013."

Notes: Trans deserve better; they are part of our social fabric. The brave ones: per wiki --- The projected active duty end strength in the armed forces for fiscal year 2017 was 1,281,900 servicemembers and a 2016 estimate that between 1,320 and 6,630 transgender individuals served on active duty.

For most of us transgenders are difficult to understand, but this movie made me feel a little more at ease. It is touching in many ways with great cinematography including of the city of Santiago. The lead heroinne who is actually a transgender originally contacted to be a consultant. is very likeable--the script originally called for her to be a pop singer, but in reality she actually is an opera singer and was allowed to change the focus. The actors are all very good--it must be difficult to play a prejudiced person (in the special feature one admitted a little unease at first, but became sympathetic and others were on her side from the beginning.

This year's winner of an Oscar for best foreign film, Chile's "A Fantastic Woman" (Una Mujer Fantastica) is spirited, moving, and visually sumptuous movie about a transgendered woman dealing with grief and bigotry after the death of her partner. Daniela Vega is terrific in the lead role. In its themes and style it has some affinities with Pedro Almodovar's films. Directed by Sebastian Lelio. Music by Matthew Herbert.

Your love is like yesterday's newspaper. No one wants to read it anymore. Sensational when it was published in the morning.
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
-Stronger. I have orangutan hands.
Did you know there are two kinds of pet owners? Those who have mammals and those who prefer birds or reptiles. We mammals have a neocortex... the most developed layer of neural tissue... where emotions are generated. That's where empathy... tenderness... and love are generated.
Saint Francis doesn't say: "Give me love, give me peace... give me light, give me this, give me that." Saint Francis says: "Make me an instrument of your love. Make me a channel of your peace."
Saying goodbye to a loved one when he dies is a basic human right, isn't it?
