I started reading this book expecting a well developed novel with an interesting plot and characters I could fall in love with. I was, unfortunately, let down. This novel is about a gay teenager named Rukhsana who needs to keep her relationship a secret from her parents and other members in her cultural community. When her mother finds Rukhsana kissing her girlfriend, she is forced to go to Bangladesh with her parents; they intended to marry Rukhsana off to a man, but this is not revealed until after they land in their home country. The abuse Rukhsana’s parents inflicts on her is startling and comes out of nowhere. While the idea of having a gay Muslim girl struggle with conservative parents would have made a great novel, I don’t think the author executed it very well. The interactions Rukhsana has with other characters seems very unnatural and unrealistic. There is a great deal of repetition in the text and the descriptions of daily routines is excessive; many parts can be cut out. I believe the novel needs to go through more editing processes, intertwining everything together and hopefully creating an exceptional book. I would not recommend this novel to others. 1/5. @booklover327 of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
