Oksana, Behave!
A Novel
Book - 2019
Oksana, Behave! follows a young Russian American woman as she grows from a trouble-making but warm-hearted eight-year-old who wants to be good into a married woman on the threshold of becoming a mother. When her family begins their new American life in Florida, her father, a former Math Olympiad champion of Russia, delivers pizzas to make ends meet and her depressed mother sits home all day worrying. Oksana's feisty grandmother loves getting whistled at--though she's unaware, as mortified Oksana knows, that the street they're walking down is called Prostitute Street. As Oksana grows up, goes to college, falls in love and continues getting herself into trouble, as her grandmother retires back to Ukraine, her father gets a job at Goldman Sachs, and her mother knits endless scarves, Oksana's longing for a Russia she never really knew looms large in her imagination, mostly through the great Russian literary masters.
