This slim volume, illustrated by Roz Chast, shares "the rules, guidelines, principles, precepts, decrees, no-no's, yes-yes's, and arbitrary judgments of Patty's mother". After a short section on the author's mother's background, each witticism is shared on a single page with an accompanying illustration. Two examples are "Girls named Susan are full of confidence." and "Everyone has a pre-determined number of footsteps to use up in a lifetime. It's reckless to exercise since you will only exhaust your quota sooner and die." Marx's mother and my father both share a love of mantras. My father's weren't quite as specific but ran more along the lines of "Life isn't fair" and "Not everyone is going to like you".

Mothers are an absolute treasure we need to protect at all costs. There is such a large spectrum of personality types and parents styles that they fall under it is difficult to find two mothers who are the same. Marx's mother has got to be one of my favorite mothers (aside from my own of course) because of her thoughts that have been documented in this quick read. I saw so much of myself in the things she said I couldn't help but smile to know I wasn't alone in my beliefs.

What a fun, quick read!
Marx's writing is honestly hilarious and Chast's artwork compliments the narrative.

How many stars is an 'eh' as opposed to a LAUGH RIGHT OUT LOUD?

Unfortunately, in my opinion 'Why Don't You Write My Eulogy Now So I Can Correct It?: A Mother's Suggestions' is a great big, weak 'EH'. It didn't wow me, it didn't make me laugh . . . or giggle or barely chuckle. I found it mildly amusing. Frankly I think the best part of the book, the most amusing part of the book, is the title.

2 stars - with mild (eh) disappointment.

For every mother. For every daughter (or son). It's a short, short book so don't buy it but check it out at your local library!

"My father once told me that if my mother died before he did, he would stay in his bedroom for the rest of his life. Partly this was because without my mother, he would not know what to wear or eat."
