A good many chapters fill this book and disc kit. The writing a bit dry, but the end of chapter sections with a grey box about a piece of music that exemplifies a type or style of music are really great. Unfortunately, the kit I borrowed had only two discs (there are a further four that would cover the material in the book), useful for only the first quarter or so of the book. The book's coverage is definitely not politically correct: its very European and Western in its emphasis, with token mentions of musical traditions outside of it. I suppose if it were four times longer, for global coverage, and with, say, thirty discs, one would have a comprehensive introduction to humans' musical traditions.
