Logic is often perceived as having little to do with the rest of philosophy, and even less to do with real life. In this lively and accessible introduction, Graham Priest shows how wrong this conception is. He explores the philosophical roots of the subject, explaining how modern formal logic deals with issues ranging from the existence of God and the reality of time to paradoxes of probability and decision theory. Along the way, the basics of formal logic are explained in simple, non-technical terms, showing that logic is a powerful and exciting part of modern philosophy.

About the Series: Combining authority with wit, accessibility, and style, Very Short Introductions offer an introduction to some of life's most interesting topics. Written by experts for the newcomer, they demonstrate the finest contemporary thinking about the central problems and issues in hundreds of key topics, from philosophy to Freud, quantum theory to Islam.

An awkward little book: the constraints upon the author were considerable, and the breadth of what he had to cover considerable. I guess he did as good a job as anyone could do. The further study guide was brief, and the chapters quite clear. The chapter on temporal logic was the best. He uses the term "situation" early on, and uses it in most chapters, but then only at the end does he say that others use the words "interpretation" or "model".

A great and concise introduction to logic. The author offers a progressive min-course of thirteen chapters that covers the basics of the field of thought and reasoning. The last chapter provide an overview of the history and its accompanied by a useful index and set of exercises.

Recommended as a first step to get into the study of this interesting field.
