World War I pacifism has a surprising result. Nastiness in the woodshed alternates with scenes of mid-life crisis. It's well-acted, but full of eye-rolling moments and unintentional humour.

Jeremy Irons plays Tom Crick, a history teacher, who tells stories to his classes when their interest in history starts to wane. The stories are based upon Crick’s woeful life and he eventually gets fired because he begins telling more stories than history and because the stories are a little too dark and lurid for the administration. Upon his goodbye to the students, he tells them, hereafter, for them, he will be “history.” I liked the film more than the critics who only gave it average reviews.
