I enjoyed this book immensely, There were times that were a bit boring, I admit. However, it was very well written.

I enjoyed this book. While it was extremely cliche', the whole plot being based on "The Hero's Journey," I still thought it was pretty interesting. The world is reminiscent of Middle Earth, but I do not feel that it took too much out of that story, it is more similar to Star Wars. Still, I found it to be an interesting read and it is worth reading the next series, since the books get progressively better.

You really can't ask for more in a classic fantasy novel. This book covered so much ground; the plot flowed seamlessly from one event to the next, and it's difficult to fathom everything that happens between the covers. The magic is great. I enjoy the Ancient Language and the balance of strengths and weaknesses in Eragon's power. Overall, he's definitely not overpowered and his character development is gradual and enjoyable to read. All of the side characters who are introduced to aid (or hinder) his journey add a lot too, although they're not as rounded as Eragon.
It ends on a great note, having just resolved a huge climactic scene and leaving off with the possibility of so much to come in the future.
A note on the audiobook: I like the narrator's voice overall (who doesn't like a British man reading fantasy?), but I'm not sure if I liked his voice for Saphira. He read her dialogue in this super gruff, deep, dragon-like voice--which makes sense--but it made it difficult to really listen to what she was saying because of how it was being said (and it removed any sense of femininity from the character, but I can't fault the narrator too much for that).
A note on the movie: I saw the movie a long time ago, and it still influenced my imagination a bit as I read. The very beginning is fairly similar, but after Chapter 10 or so the two representations diverge more and more. The book is, of course, much more complex, interesting, and beautifully-told. Thankfully I was able to get most of the movie out of my head since the book was so different. I definitely recommend reading the book first...and possibly avoiding the movie altogether.

My 10-year-old son loves this series. He has read the Harry Potter series eight times because he was unable to find something else as good ... until the Inheritance Cycle.

This is genius for a fifteen year old. It's believable, exciting, and pretty much everything you want to read. Eragon is flawed like a real person and not perfect and his companions are very interesting.

Being the first novel in the Inheritance Cycle, Christopher Paolini does a good job of captivating his audience of anyone who enjoys an action-packed adventurous novel. Eragon, a poor farm boy, comes across what seems like a valuable blue stone in a forest. He soon realizes that the stone was a dragon’s egg that would later hatch, causing him to flee his village on a journey into a world of magic. However, this novel does present itself as a slightly stereotypical fantasy novel. Nonetheless, I recommend this novel to anyone who is unfamiliar to the fantasy novel and wants a book that will get them engaged in the world of fantasy. Rating: 3.5/5

I understand that the author was fairly young when he started this, and I applaud him for his skill. The world building he does is especially good, and I found it to be consistent throughout. That said, much fantasy has become cliché, and Eragon struggled a bit with that. I could see bits of LOTR, Star Wars, and just general high fantasy traditions in the story, which detracted a little from the enjoyment. When thinking about it, it was almost Star Wars plot with LOTR characters. Good job, though, just not quite my thing. I was disappointed, seeing as the books were wonderfully long and I had hoped for a great story, but a lot of excess could have been cut out without damage to the story.

Eragon told Saphira, "You should land somewhere now and hide. We're going in." "Sticking your nose where it doesn't belong. Again." She said sourly. "I know. But Brom and I have some advantages most people don't. We'll be all right." "If anything happens, I'm going to bind you to my back and never let you off."
"I love you too."
"Then I will bind you all the tighter."
