Pearl is an amazing woman. Pregnant at 13 by a policeman and then hiding for five years from a deadly secret. Her son Leonard is also amazing, as Mitch finds out when he volunteers to babysit for Pearl one day. She never returns to pick him up. The story moves along and slowly we see the two form a family, always with the mystery of Pearl's disappearance in the back of their minds. I loved the tone of the story and the almost unreal moral convictions of Pearl and optimism of Leonard. Mitch is a treasure too.

Great book with an interesting structure and touching points of view. Explores love without being disgustingly mushy or grossly feminine. Simple, solid book.
