The determination and perseverance of a woman to make ends meet knowing her husband wasn't going to do it.
I thought she should've known better than to pop kids out left and right knowing the father was irresponsible, and a drunk.
When he struck her, she should've gotten rid of his sorry self.

An idiot woman who married an alcoholic brute, had 10 kids by him tries to turn her life around. Strongest argument I've ever seen for neutering anyone who shows signs of too much fertility.

Heroic mom, loser dad story. Great depiction of the 60s and the contest culture. Julianne Moore is great as usual.

Very well done. Well acted and directed. This piece takes place in the late fifties and early sixties when contest required brain substance and not these random rigged contest of today where I believe no one really ever wins, they just collect you information to send you tons of junk mail. Can you say Publishers Clearing House? Fun to watch, considering it is based on a true story. Throughout you wanted to strangle the father in front of his kids. I had to remind myself that it was the way men behaved back then (and may be today too.) Costuming and setting was great from hair to the kids clothing. Watch with a friend who knows this time period to fill you in just case you don't know what life was like back then. Enjoy!

This was a great book, unfortunately the movie doesn't do it justice. Definitely just read the book instead. It was a touching memoir about a woman with incredible strength. The movie was as much about the father as it was about Evelyn Ryan. In the book she kept an upbeat positive attitude in the face of poverty and and abusive husband. In the movie the back and forth between the peppy optimism and the emotional scenes made the her appear silly, and made the emotional scenes overly melodramatic.

The true story of a 1950's housewife who helps support her large family by winning cash, household appliances, and various products from promotional contests. Her positive attitude maintains the family during her husband's alcoholic rages. Touching and humourous, with great performances by Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson, Laura Dern, and the young actors portraying the children.
