Richard Burton is the star of this film. Clint Eastwood may have been more popular with younger audiences but Clint will never be mistaken for an actor. "Where Eagles Dare" is a good action film with a good supporting cast. Read up on Burton and you too will be impressed with this man from Wales. He didn't need to link up with Elizabeth Taylor to gain fame. Sadly, he drank himself to death at the early age of 58.

Loved it. Great plot in that you never know who is good until near the end.

Wow! This movie brings back a lot of memories. I remember when it was first released. The script is well done. Stars Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood did an outstanding performance. If you have never watched it, find a large screen, the backdrop of Germany and the castle are spectacular. The film and script hold up some 40 years later!

Don’t make the same mistake!!! If you watched this movie as a kid and loved it, leave it right there and don’t revisit this movie. It doesn’t stand up well at all. I ended up laughing the entire length of the movie, very dated. Scenery is very nice.

Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood star as Allies on a mission to infiltrate a Nazi-occupied castle and rescue a captured US general in this WWII action thriller.

It may seem odd, given my high grade, that I find this film's plot to be intensely uninteresting, but I do. Not only that, but I really didn't care about any of the characters and whether they lived or died. Except maybe Eastwood's, but that's just because he's played by Clint Eastwood.

The script by so-called "action master" Alistair MacLean is weak - ridiculously and implausibly twisty. There is one scene in the middle of the film that acts as a sort of plot twist spiral - there must be ten to twenty twists and gun turnings within a period of fifteen minutes. It's pretty silly. Not to mention that the film ends with one last predictable and obligatory twist.

The dialogue is generally serviceable but completely unremarkable. And the performances are handled capably, but also unremarkably.

However, the action is plentiful and solid, and there is an agreeable helping of bloody violence.

But what I really do love about this film is the visual atmosphere. Those snowy mountains! Those incessant blue night filters! Those smoky wood and gray stone interiors! I just can't get enough of it. The Austrian Alps have never looked better. The film's look is the closest I've ever come to my all-time favorite film - the Holy Grail of film atmosphere - The Fearless Vampire Killers. Not to say Where Eagles Dare is in the same league - the look is beautiful, but the tone is a bit unsatisfying and, as mentioned before, the script is completely inconsequential. These settings would be so much more alluring if they surrounded a mystical, supernatural plotline - the snow, gray skies, and impossibly high castle just beg to. But I'll always have The Fearless Vampire Killers for that, and I'm just thankful to have the images of Where Eagles Dare rattling around my brain.

Loved this movie. Burton is perfect as the tough guy who would do anything to achieve his goal. At that time women were shown more realistically—not as the ultra-strong, fake rambos movies nowadays make them. Highly recommend it.

War - real good WWII, lots of action, deception. Early Eastwood.

A complicated WW2 war/spy thriller. You don't know who is on which side and must pay attention. Makes the Brits & Germans look cunning while the naive American (Clint Eastwood) is along for the ride. Good fun.
